In August I was invited to present at an oncology meeting, the best part of which was a free trip to the mountains of Montana! Between meetings I had the chance to do some hiking, both solo and with my friend Autumn. I had two "moose sightings" which was a backpacking first for me! Here's a link to some pictures of my trip.

First Day of School

After a great three years at his beloved preschool, B started "el-ee-MENT-ary" school (pronounciation his) last week at George Watts Montessori, a public magnent school in Durham. He is in a preK/kindergarten class. He seems to be very enthusiastic so far and especially enjoys carrying his own lunch box and backpack, as you can see. He put up with Mom and Dad tagging along on his first day, but pretty much pretended not to know us!

To the Outer Banks and Beyond

This month we loaded up for our second annual family vacation to the northern Outer Banks of NC. Despite the dreaded "dead battery on the DVD player" crisis, all 4 managed to survive the drive. We had a week of beautiful weather and fun time at the beach, pool and cruising around the island on (or behind) our bikes. B's swimming skills improved--he can now actually remove his feet from the bottom of the pool! S had a good time in the sand (not so much on the waves) and did his first "real" walking at the ripe old age of 16 months. Friends were able to join us for the final weekend which made it extra special.

Happy Birthdays!

It was a big week at the Hayes house as B turned four on April 10 and S turned one on April 14! We celebrated with a trip to see the Durham Bulls with friends and a joint birthday party on Saturday complete with cookie-cakes and lots of cool gifts. The guys also got cookies delivered to school for snack on their respective actual birthdays, so they didn't have to share EVERYTHING :) We're still a little in shock at how fast the past year has gone by, but we're very proud of our "big" boys.

Day at the Park

I apologize to all for posting Christmas pictures in February, but just now got around to downloading them all from the camera. We had a great LONG trip heading out to see all the grandparents. Growing Up

The big news of our week is S, who at 7 1/2 months finally decided he would try some food other than Mommy Milk, which is a relief to Mommy. As you can see above, he now eats just about anything. The mess on his face used to be a carrot.

S also got promoted to the "big" bathtub this week, which means more bath time fun for everyone...except Mommy, that is.

HangingRock State Park, November 2007

Over Veteran's Day weekend, we took our annual fall hiking trip. As we've added small feet to the family, "backpacking" has evolved into "carpacking", but we still enjoy getting out there and teaching B and S the art of peeing in the woods (S still refuses to abandon the pamper, but we're working on him...).

This year we went camping and dayhiking at Hanging Rock State Park near Winston-Salem, NC. Our brave friends Matt and Amanda went along and B had lots of fun keeping them on the run! He was a real trooper and hiked about 3 miles on Saturday. S has taken the Baby Backpack spot now and had a great time with his Daddy-sherpa. Both had a great time sleeping in the tent and conked out immediately!
